This leaves two choices: Maintain the farmhouse as is until it finally crumbles to the ground after years of exposure to the elements or patch it where it needs it most until a better solution can be found. Indeed, welfare reform is more than a casual issue where society is concerned; the extent to which proposed reform stands to impact public health is both grand and far-reaching. While the proposed time restriction will compel many able-bodied individuals to clean up their lives and find gainful employment, it will be utterly disastrous for those whose physical and/or mental limitations will not allow it. II. PROS AND CONS Whether or not welfare reform has been beneficial in the United States is not a question that can be
answered with a simple yes or no. There are a number of variables that must be taken into consideration before an accurate assessment of such impact can be made.
The debate surrounding Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) - also known as welfare - and its five-year lifetime limit is one that speaks to the need to encourage
otherwise nonproductive members of society to become more instrumental in their own well being. Urging people to become less and less dependent upon the system has, indeed, helped some
states in their ongoing attempt to stay ahead of the game; however, critics claim that removing a familys TANF aid without there being a solid alternative support system in place
for their continued survival is doing nothing more than pushing its already financially compromised members deeper and deeper into poverty (Taylor et al 175).
