of terminology currently underway: those satellites we formerly and currently refer to as weather satellites or meteorological satellites increasingly are becoming known as operational environmental satellites. Unlike groups of people who periodically change the preferred term for describing them (i.e., the word Oriental is very nearly a racial slur today; the preferred descriptive is Asian-American) but do not materially change themselves or their genetic characteristics, there is a sound reason for the change of reference from "meteorological satellite" to "operational environmental satellite." Whereas the earliest weather satellites held only black and white cameras and little else in the way of monitoring equipment or devices, todays meteorological satellites not only provide greatly improved weather information, they also monitor an "ever expanding range of environmental properties, such as aerosol, dust and ash clouds from volcanic eruptions, ozone, and land vegetation cover" (Morel, 2004). History of Weather Satellites The United States launched the first weather satellite, the TIROS 1, in 1960. TIROS was an acronym for "Television and Infra-Red Observation Satellite," indicating the means by which the satellite acquired and disseminated information. Placed in a low orbit at the equator, TIROS 1 made it possible for the first time for forecasters to see entire large weather systems, such as hurricanes in the Atlantic. Most of the earths surface is water. Boats, buoys and other points were able to provide data on weather conditions in their immediate vicinity, but that still left vast areas of ocean unreported. That remains the case today as well, but the visual support that the satellites provide enable weather forecasters to predict landfall of hurricanes and other serious weather events, with enough lead time that the residents of affected ...
