is that the persons who have suffered the most, still seem to be making a slow gain against centuries of oppression by various leaders, principalities, and even their own culture. The women of Afghanistan, however, have made remarkable strides toward bettering their lives and the lives of those women yet unborn, hoping for a time and a place where their gifts, talents and abilities are fully appreciated. There are several womens organizations which have played an integral part in furthering this goal. Many of these organizations are not Afghanistan based, but rather global organizations, whose aim is equality and better conditions for all women. Vital Voices Global Partnership is one such organization. Working together with Farida Azizi in Afghanistan, their involvement in Afghanistan predates even the Taliban takeover. Their goals are three pronged, all with an emphasis on reconstruction of Afghanistan and a continued effort to elevate womens visibility in Afghanistan society. Their first goal is to continue to work toward bringing women into the political arena and to position them to resume active roles in politics and civil society(Vital Voices, 2003). In addition, women are being encouraged to develop and nurture businesses with the capacity to generate revenue capable of supporting a family. Last, but certainly, not least in importance, is their goal of ending the human rights abuses and oppressive prejudice toward women and girls in Afghanistan. These violations of human rights have included public support of murder, physical abuse to denial of education, and recognition of employment opportunities. Unfortunately, most of the rhetoric coming from the interim government there is simply empty and meaningless.
