Though signs and symbols are frequently interchanged and do have similar meanings, they also have their differences. Signs, by their very nature, stand for something specific; their purpose is to help an observer connect, think about and deduce (Allan). Signs point something out or instruct someone about something; more importantly, theyre physical objects, rather than representative objects (Allan). Common signs include stop signs and other roadway signs. There are also signs in places such as malls, airports and bus stations - again, their goal is to inform so the reader can learn something (Allan). Symbols, however, are representations of something invisible (Allan). A symbol represents by association or resmblance (Allan). Symbols dont teach or encourage the reader to deduce or learn; rather they are used for inference (Allan). As an example, a cross typically is a symbol of Christianity, while a sign might announce that a reader is nearing a Christian church. An octogonal sign with the word "stop" on it is a sign instructing motorists to stop. But the visual of a palm with fingers pointed upwards and close together symbolizes "stop," though it doesnt specifically instruct a person to stop. Another comparison is that a dove with an olive branch in its claw symbolizes peace, much as an upside-down "Y" in an circle is the symbol of peace. But another common sign on a front door of a church (or a home) might read "Peace be With You" - and could actually include that dove or peace sign as part of it. In short, while signs are physical, specific objects with specific purposes, symbols are more representations of concepts. ...
