Zwingli might not be as well known as Martin Luther, and his influence perhaps not so great, Zwingli did make important contributions to the Reformation. Ulrich Zwingli was a Swiss theologian leader of the reformation in Switzerland. He was born on Jan. 1, 1484, in Wildhaus, Sankt Gallen, Switzerland. He went to Universities at both Vienna and Basel. Zwingli was deeply influenced by the spirit of Liberal humanism. In 1506 he was ordained and assigned to the town of Glarus as a parish priest. Glarus then was well known as a center for recruiting mercenary soldiers for Europes armies. On two occasions Zwingli served as chaplain with Glarus troops during bloody fighting on foreign soil, and these experiences led him to denounce the mercenary system publicly. In retaliation certain town officials conspired to try to make Zwingli leave Glarus. In 1516 he accepted an appointment at Einsiedeln, southeast of Zurich. "Ulrich Zwingli was the leader of the fledgling reformation in Zurich. In 1519 he became the peoples priest at the Great Minster Church in Zurich. He launched the reformation not by posting theses, as Luther did, but by preaching biblical sermons from the pulpit. While Luther allowed what the Bible did not prohibit, Zwingli prohibited what the Bible did not specifically prescribe. He stressed the ability of common people to interpret the Bible for themselves and taught the memorial view of the Lords Supper.
