This principle encompasses the concept that an extended composition can grow organically from a bare kernel of a musical idea (Machlis 224). Theres an apocryphal story that when asked what his famous motif meant, Beethoven said that it was "fate knocking at the door." Whether this story if accurate or not, it aptly describes the effect of this powerful motif. The following discussion of Beethovens Fifth will concentrate on the third and fourth movements of this famous symphony. However, in order to appreciate the way that these movements fit into the overall structure of this symphony as a whole, the opening motif of the first movement has to be addressed because this one theme dominates the whole work. From this bare minimum of a musical idea, Beethovens musical imagination pictures it developing, growing almost organically into one of the most profound musical compositions of all time. The importance of this motif is shown quickly in the third movement, which is a Scherzo, because thematic structure of the third movement returns the music to the somber home key of the opening movement, which is C minor. At this point, from the depths of the bass rises a characteristic idea, a "rocket theme" that is first introduced by the cellos and double basses (Machlis 227). In this manner, the basic rhythm of the first movement is reflected as it reappears fortissimo in the horns. The opening motif, in this movement, becomes an "heroic, mighty march" that is very much in C major (Symphony No. 5 in C minor, op. 67). This move to a major mode gives a victorious ring to the symphonic struggle inherent in the music earlier.
