possible violent gene. It is believed by some that violent criminals are born, not made through environment. It could well be said that this relates to other conditions such as alcoholism, or the biological realities involved with homosexuality, all of which have been connected to genetics. The following paper offers research and commentary on what is known, and speculated, concerning this violent gene. The Violent Gene "Some of us, it seems, were just born to be bad. Scientists say they are on the verge of pinning down genetic and biochemical abnormalities that predispose their bearers to violence" (Overbye, 1994; 76). This particular author indicates that as scientists essentially seek such an aggressive gene many industries and individuals are in the "wings" waiting to pounce on solid evidence, people and organizations that perhaps ultimately make money on such conditions: "Waiting in the wings are child-testing programs, drug manufacturers, insurance companies, civil rights advocates, defense attorneys and anxious citizens for whom the violent criminal has replaced the beady-eyed communist as the boogeyman" (Overbye, 1994; 76). There is no real proof that such a gene exists, but yet there are many who would truly like an easy explanation for the existence of violent individuals, just as there seems to be an apparently easy explanation for homosexuality, alcoholism, cancer, blue eyes, and even shyness (Overbye, 1994; 76). However, evidence does seem to suggest that, "a constellation of influences leads to a life of crime, among them poverty, maleness and a trait known as impulsivity, presumably caused by bad brain chemistry, caused in turn by bad genes" (Overbye, 1994; 76).
