in Britains cities is growing, as the black youth culture and gangs become more of a social problem as well. The statistics are startling, and reveal that the situation cannot be ignored. It is imperative to understand the problem in order to determine appropriate and effective solutions. Britains Gun Culture London is rated as the gun crime capital in Britain - as well as all of Europe (Gun Crime & Violent Crime Soaring). In fact, in 2002 gun murders in London increased 90% over the previous year, and this figure also represents a growing number of black-on-black murders as well (Gun Crime & Violent Crime Soaring). "Britains capital is awash with cocaine, guns and drugs money, a multi-million pound economy subverting morality and social responsibility, appealing to those who have been excluded from society" (Jasper). Even more disturbing is that 45% of the black population in London is unemployed, and the black prison population has doubled since 1994 (Jasper). Furthermore, infant mortality is double that of white Londoners and 40% of the psychiatric beds in London are occupied by young, black men (Jasper). The list of disproportionate hardships goes on and on and on, but the results are always the same (Jasper). Black crime is growing, and is becoming an increasingly significant social problem (Jasper). In the 2000/2001 year, 417 people were killed as the result of handguns (Firearms Crime on the Rise).
