opinions on the role of the state, it is not hard to make generalizations. For one, the Asian economy in recent times has not been well. While North America thrived during the mid-1990s, the Thai bath fell and many nations in the region were affected. But Asia did not grow up in a vacuum. It took time and throughout the centuries there were critics in respect to the role that the Asian government has played in world affairs and how it had treated its own people. One commentator explains that about five hundred years ago, Europeans went to Asia in order to look for wealth, but three hundred years ago, the center of civilization and development was still primarily in Asia ("Going," 1999). It is true that Asia is quite old and possesses a great history. One wonders why it does not take a significantly greater leadership position in the world. Many think it should have had the opportunity by now. Still, Asia remains a player in politics. The author goes on with the observation that the gap between Europe and Asia really just begun about two hundred years ago, and European writers such as Marx and Weber each falsely attributed many Asian characteristics as reasons for the growing gap between the continents ("Going," 1999). The proof that such authors were in error is seen by the current situation as after independence fifty years ago, a great many nations have rendered it a region of great economic growth (1999).
