the very least causes lower self-esteem and discomfort in living normally. For example, it is harder for an obese person to engage in healthful physical activity and many people realize
that they look better thinner. Of course, losing weight is easier said than done, so it seems that on the periphery are groups that make excuses for a deadly condition.
The evidence does seem to show that obesity does increase morbidity and mortality rates. Under the assumption that obesity is truly a problem, it pays to look at what is
called the BMI or body mass index. Today, many doctors and laymen are using the body mass index to calculate just how much individuals are overweight. Obviously, there are different
degrees of obesity so there should be criteria to distinguish those in different categories. Some physicians hand out cards which contain charts of what the BMI really means and into
which category a person falls. Similarly, new diet books have begun to focus on the body mass calculation. There are various definitions to determine what is normal or clinically notable.
For example, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m ( Must, Spadano & Coakley et al., 1999, p.1524) is considered to be normal and a pre-obese stage is considered to
be between 25 and 29 kg/m( Must, Spadano & Coakley et al., 1999, p.1524). Generally speaking this pre-obese stage is termed overweight ( Must, Spadano & Coakley, 1999).
