The relationship that has existed throughout history between those of European descent and the indigenous peoples that inhabited the Americas since ancient times has been tenuous at best. This relationship has been complicated by geographical, historical, political, constitutional, cultural and even racial considerations. When it comes to Canada, these considerations are no better illustrated in the literature than by L.F.S. Uptons "The Origins of Canadian Indian Policy". Upton (1973) provides an invaluable overview of Canadas historic relationship with its indigenous inhabitants. That relationship was based solely upon the relative degree of usefulness the Native Americans presented to Canada. Upton (1973) presents the thesis that by 1814 Canadas indigenous peoples were no longer of any particular value to Canada. Upton (1973, 296) contends, in fact, that: "The only economic interest that the Empire had in the Indians was to arrange for the peaceful transfer of the land to which they had possessory title". By that time the Indians were no longer valuable allies in the ongoing struggle for continental power, the importance of their contributions to the fur trade had waned, and the family farms that became Canadas unit of settlement had no need for Indian labor (Upton, 1973). Canadas Native Americans did not even represent a substantial customer base for the products being imported into the country from Britain (Upton, 1973).
