Historically, while many people think of Greek gods as archetypes and align their personalities with one particular type, the truth is that some are not easily characterized. Dionysus for example is a god that is also known by the name Bacchus but he is also rather diverse, which might account for the prefix in his name. He is certainly contradictory. Some might also call him ambitious. And while one can say that many people embrace this type of trait, it seems that for the portraiture of Dionysus, such is accentuated. He is feminine and masculine, good and evil and this multidimensional quality is hard to dispute. He is also bold and does what he wants. He had high goals and and seems to achieve a great deal, gaining followers along the way. In exploring Nietzsches The Birth of Tragedy and Euripides The Bacchae, it becomes clear that Dionysus could be described as a contradictory god as well as an ambiguous god. In fact, historically, Dionysus is rather mysterious and has been depicted in a variety of stories in a variety of ways. First, Dionysus is a contradictory god. He does things that might surprise people because they see him in a certain light. This god of wine sometimes does things that are unseemly. In The Bacchae, Euripides (1954) writes: "Who says Dionysus is a god; who says he was Sewn up in Zeuss thigh. The truth about Dionysus Is that hes dead, burnt to a cinder by lightning Along with his mother, because she said Zeus lay with her" (199).
