expression. Among the more interesting from a legal and a societal perspective is symbolic expression or, more specifically, symbolic speech. There are many reasons to explore the freedom of expression as it pertainst to symbolic speech more thoroughly. It might be argued, for example, that the basic right to freedom of expression is what keeps us a free and democratic nation. In todays world symbolism is a more and more frequent component of our expression. Our ever increasing reliance on symbolism to convey our thoughts and feelings makes it imperative that we have a full understanding that our right to free expression very much extends to the right to express ourselves symbolically as well. This right has been tested on more than one occasion, however, in our society. Consequently, various laws and public policies have been put in place to better define and protect it. The educational environment it seems has set the stage for numerous challenges of the extent to which the First Amendment of the US Constitution protects our right to free expression in a symbolic sense in particular. Interestingly, some of the most groundbreaking federal Court cases challenging the extent of our right to freedom of symbolic expression have been based on the actions of students. It might be posited that as a group students made considerable progress in the past few decades promoting the right to symbolic speech. In the last decade, however, there have been far fewer challenges and some of the challenges that were made simply did not have the substance of previous challenges.
