York and in Washington D.C. The European Union, like the United States, is examining its policies due to their realization that such attacks could have easily happened within their own borders. The immigration policies of the EU have largely been ineffective, due mainly to the separate nature of each country, thereby eliminating effective, combined efforts. But change is in the works, as these countries now try to unite their efforts for more effective control. Furthermore, there are many economic issues to consider, since Europe is aging and pensions will be drawn against a dwindling workforce. Immigration presents real possibilities for solutions, and while many countries enthusiastically support such measures, others protest vehemently. There are no easy answers in regards to immigration policy, and the EU is realizing this as they battle through very tough issues. The more one understands the basis of these issues, the more their complexity is revealed. The Immigration Policy of the European Union One of the main problems which the European Union has faced in recent times in regards to immigration is the fight against international organized crime (European Union Immigration Policy, 2003). Sensitivities around the world have been high since the terrorist attacks, and the European Union too must face these important issues (European Union Immigration Policy, 2003).
