Von Huben 11/2010 Please Introduction Mormonism is one of the fastest growing religions in the world. This paper looks briefly at its establishment in the American West. Discussion The putative founder of Mormonism was Joseph Smith, Jr., who, as a teenager, began to search for a church that could help him find "where he stood with God" (A brief history of Mormonism, 2008; hereafter "Brief history, 2008"). He was in New York State at the time, and had several visions, including one that led him to the location of some buried gold plates (Brief history, 2008). The plates "contained a religious history of the ancient inhabitants of America, including a visit by Jesus Christ. This book is known today as the Book of Mormon" (Brief history, 2008). With these visions guiding him, Smith and others organized a church on April 6, 1830; it was called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Brief history, 2008). The adherents moved to Kirtland, Ohio, just outside Cleveland, where they prospered; at the same time, a branch of the church was established in Jackson County, Missouri (Brief history, 2008). Unfortunately, the Mormons there faced religious and cultural differences with their neighbors, and were soon driven out of Jackson County; when the Ohio church collapsed as well due to financial problems, the two congregations merged in Caldwell County, Missouri, at a place named Far West (Brief history, 2008).
