It was the one place that seemed to be home to all the stars that were of any importance, and any film that came out of Hollywood was eagerly awaited as well as watched with almost a sense of worship. However, the studio system of Hollywood began to make a decline after the so called Golden years, and became something different than it once was. The following paper examines the decline of the Hollywood studio system, beginning with the Golden years. The paper then examines the decline and then the decade of the 60s wherein the studio system truly changed and demonstrated the effect of the decline in the Hollywood studio system. The Golden Years It is interesting, as well as ironic, to note that during the Great Depression people went to the movies all the time. In fact, according to one author, the number of people going to the movies was almost three times what it is today (History Television, 2004). "Conveniently, the studio system, which had cemented its existence over the past 15 years with an assembly line production process, was ideally tailored to this high demand for a great volume of product" (History Television, 2004). It was the studio which controlled all aspects of production, from screenwriting to directing to distribution. The studio system played by particular rules. For example, the roles of any accepted films were divided between those stars that were part of the system, with the stars playing the same particular role over and over again.
