There is an ongoing debate about how much and how far the educational system should influence children. Is it appropriate for that system and its teachers to influence a childs character development? More to the point, is the education of character something that can be controlled? This begs the question of whether or not a case might be drawn against secular development and development aimed towards a religious end, or if mixing the two the proper route to take. Many feel that schools and teachers have absolutely no right to influence a childs character, while others feel that there is just really no way around it. After all, school does play a critical part in a childs life, often providing many of those social "firsts" that are so crucial to maturing and growing as an individual. This paragraph helps the student set up the fundamental argument the paper will employ. While some rail against teachers playing a role in a childs character development, the teaching of moral and ethical standards may be necessary even from a strictly managerial standpoint. Consider this: there has been a growing trend of children displaying dramatic behavioral problems while on school grounds, and with no parental guardians about, it is the teachers and school administrators that have to step forward and take responsibility (Brannon, 2008).
