one really knows if the Queen played a part in her husbands death and she is extremely sympathetic to Hamlets plight and sincerely did grieve Ophelias death. Gertrude always tried
to look on the bright side and get on with her life. This would be viewed as psychologically healthy today. Yet, her son Hamlets anguish over the death of the
King, and the marriage to his brother is the crux of this characters dilemma. Although she has successfully gone on with her life, Hamlet himself views her behavior as incestuous
and indicative of guilt. Gertrude knows this and fears her own son. While this is so, it appears that she only has a small amount of guilt. Not very emotional,
we cannot with certainty say what she is feeling but it does not appear that her actions warrant the accusation of murder. Evil, no. Naive, perhaps. She doesnt want to
see reality. Her hasty marriage and lust for her husbands brother is probably in itself enough for the guilt and shame she feels. There is absolutely nothing to indicate that
she is corrupt; she is merely Hamlets scapegoat. We may contrast the dilemma of the mother-son relationship in this play to any number of similar relationships in which a child
is affected by parental behavior. Sometimes, there is no reason other than the childs own psychological makeup. It does not seem that Hamlet was abused in any way by his
parents. Hamlets despair may be related to matters of religion and philosophy, as seen in his most famous "To be or not to be" soliloquy , found in Act III,
Scene I. Here, he is in despair, perhaps suicidal. He explores areas of existentialism as he is suffering so much here on this earth; he wonders if it is worth
