No matter how good someone is at his or her job, there must be periodic examination of that persons continued ability to carry out tasks pertinent to the job. Teachers are certainly not fallible when it comes to losing site of the primary focus when, for example, they have been at the job for a couple of decades, become too comfortable in the same approach they take with every passing semester and fall into a stagnated pattern void of enthusiastic endeavor that ultimately robs students of any thoughtful learning. Had these teachers not been locked into job security under the precept of permanent tenure and been expected - as with virtually every other industry guided by constant change - to submit to regular performance reviews, there may not be the tremendous teacher shortage there is today because the bad would easily be weeded out so the good could take its place.
