pregnancy is becoming a bigger and bigger problem in the United States. It is a problem which involves numerous causative factors but a problem for which there is really
one simple solution. Teen pregnancy is the result of a decline in the nations morals and ethics. It is a problem which is caused by the mindset of
"each for his own" and pleasure over restraint. It is a problem which can be traced back several generations but especially to the "sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll" era of
the 1960s and 1970s. It is a problem which revolves around the morals and teachings in the home and in the nations school systems.
The Decline of Societal Mores Some blame the increase in the number of
teen pregnancies on factors such as drug use. A number of laws have been passed in fact on this premise. In 1937, for example, the Marijuana Tax Act
was passed (Grinspoon 92). This act made it illegal to possess or use marijuana based on the premise that its use caused violent crime, "sexual excess", and addiction.
Although drug use has, in fact, been correlated with the increase in teen pregnancy; the increased propensity of our nations youth to use drugs can be traced back to the
same root reasons as teen pregnancy itself. Drug use and teen pregnancy are both results of a decrease in morals and values.
