Introduction The migration into the United Kingdom has increased steadily since the end of World War II (Phillips, 1998). Migrants have arrived in large numbers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the West Indies, South Asia, the Caribbean and other regions (Phillips, 1998). The 1991 census revealed that the minority ethnic population totaled 3 million, which represented 5.5 percent of the entire population of the United Kingdom (Phillips, 1998). The proportion of ethnic minorities in London is 40 percent and 38 percent in Leicester (Curtis , 2001). The following table reports the ethnic distribution in the United Kingdom as of the 2001 census.
