little this person could do. The physician, after all, was almost considered God, and if the patient wasnt happy about the situation, it was just too bad. Then the courts began entering the pictures - the courts, and the legal profession, and when a patient felt he or she was wronged by a physician, at least financial redress could be brought about by bringing suit against a physician. This worked fine if the physician was a charlatan or quack. The problem was, when patients began becoming "litigation crazy," physicians and other health care providers found themselves at the wrong end of a lawsuit, whether it was their fault or not. As the rate of malpractice suits began to grow, so did the rate of malpractice insurance. This ended up having a dire impact on the medical profession. For one thing, many qualified obstetricians ended up leaving their practices and focusing more on the gynecological aspects of the area. Many of these who had been driven out were because they simply couldnt afford the huge premiums of their malpractice insurance. While many of them loved delivering babies, it was just becoming too expensive a proposition. Jury awards against "aggrieved" parties in the millions were a little out of line. But even those physicians who werent obstetricians ran into problems. In an effort to avoid any type of malpractice accusation, these physicians began practicing "prevention medicine," in other words, ordering up costly tests (many of which that werent necessary) in an attempt to "cover their rears" in the event some disease should strike and they were to blame because they didnt run the right test at the right time.
