Shortly after the first plane, commandeered by the terrorists, contacted with the first tower of the Trade Center, hundreds of rescue workers, including firefighters, policemen, and search and rescue units were deployed to the site. No one could have predicted, or have known that in a short while, a span of no more than thirty minutes, a second plane, also hijacked, would find its intended target of the second tower. No one could have predicted that while thousands were running from the building, or jumping to their safety, hundreds of these city workers were running in, most of them to their own deaths. Hundreds of stories of breathtaking courage are emerging from the smoke in New York and Washington. Firefighters crawling into narrow holes, probing with cameras, listening for signs of life, ignoring the quivering rubble(Dispatch 2001,B9). In the few months since the attacks many questions have been raised concerning the terrible loss of life and especially the loss of the lives of those city workers that went into an impossible situation and as a result never returned to their families that night. "We saw the firefighters coming up the stairs as we were going down," said one worker from the New York Daily News(Dispatch 2001,B9). So it begs the question: is there a need to reform or pass some legislation that stipulates when a rescue worker may or may not enter a situation? Would such a law be enforceable? and would the men and women who do this on a daily basis adhere to the new reforms? The Holy Catholic Church has some interesting thoughts about this topic.
