The city now has a population of 4 million but the estimate for 2050 is 6 million. This essay discusses what this forecast is based on and the factors that have influenced the growth on Sydney in the past. visited by Europeans in the 17th century and the east coast was charted in 1770 by Captain James Cook, who called the island New South Wales and claimed it for King George III (Interactive Arts, 2002). The American Revolution kept the British too busy to do anything about Australia for many years but eventually a botanist, Joseph Banks, established a prison colony on the territory (Interactive Arts, 2002). Beginning in the late 1780s, however, the British did begin to send ships to their new colony (Interactive Arts, 2002). They originally landed in Botany Bay but upon finding there was no fresh water, they continued north to the area we now call Sydney Harbour (Interactive Arts, 2002). It was called Port Jackson at the time but subsequently Captain Arthur Phillip renamed the cove Sydney Cove in honor of Thomas Townshend, i.e., Baron Sydney who was the minister for the Colony (Interactive Arts, 2002). The Cove would be dropped from the name (Interactive Arts, 2002). Thus, Sydney was a penal colony inhabited by "568 male and 191 female convicts with 13 children, 206 marines with 26 wives and 13 children, and 20 officials having made the voyage" (Interactive Arts, 2002). The year was 1788 (Interactive Arts, 2002). Others followed, not convicts, so that by 1810, the population had grown to 10,000 (Interactive Arts, 2002). By 1813, the Blue Mountains were crossed and other fertile land discovered bringing more people (Interactive Arts, 2002). The British stopped sending convicts in 1840 and Sydney was declared a city in 1842 (Interactive Arts, 2002). By 1901, there were six separate British colonies across the territory of Australia (Interactive Arts, 2002).
