In todays world, there is less of a stigma about being gay than there was even decades ago. Now, there are role models on television and in real life(Bernstein, 2003). Because of this, young people are coming out at earlier ages (Bernstein, 2003). That said, Bernstein (2003) writes: "The path to adulthood for any gay child remains strewn with cultural land mines" (p.64). While it may be difficult to grow up gay, there are now more support services than ever before. Years ago, there was no support. In fact, Ellen Degeneres came out on her television show in 1997 and at that time, children were shielded from gay programming. In 1996, there was a demonstration protesting gay support groups ("STUDENTS PROTEST CLUB BAN AIMED AT GAY SUPPORT GROUPS," 1996). One can surmise that the history of gay and lesbian support is only a decade long, starting in the mid-1990s through today when gay and lesbian students can access support services rather easily. That is not to say that no support existed in the past, but it is only in the last decade that such support is acceptable and even encouraged. About 1,200 schools embrace organizations known as Gay-Straight Alliances or GSAs (Bernstein, 2003). Although it is not uncommon to see gay and lesbian couples at the high school level, there are children who question their sexuality early on. That is, being gay is not something that suddenly emerges at adolescence when children are exploring their sexuality. Sometimes, that is exactly when the difference is acknowledged, but for some, the realization occurs much earlier.
