Background Through the 1960s and earlier, management guru Peter Drucker has said that most people did not think in terms of "being their own boss," that the first thought for income was that of working for someone else. Since the 1960s, however, increasing numbers of individuals seek to maintain greater control over their own lives and particularly the course of the business in which they work. Some franchisers were nothing short of dictatorial in the past, but today they generally act more as partners. From the beginning, the primary attractive points of operating a franchise include the ability to operate a business without being totally alone. The franchiser does most of the advertising; sets menus and product lines; and offers individual franchisees volume pricing on required supply items used by customers.
