Cognitive behavior therapy joins two effective approaches, cognitive therapy and behavior therapy, with the objective of changing both the individual's thinking patterns and the habitual behavioral reactions to certain internal and external stimuli. All three of these models have been found to be successful in treating a plethora of conditions. At least one research study concluded that combining cognitive behavior therapy with family based therapy was even more effective in reducing substance abuse among adolescents. A very extensive study concluded that the treatment for substance abuse must be matched to the specific patient and this study further concluded that it is not so much the specific treatment program used with substance abusers as it is "who provides [the treatment] and the manner in which it is delivered." It is a very broad field in that cognition affects behavior and, in fact, the cognitive domain impacts how one feels. One of the more helpful results of cognitive psychology has been the creation of cognitive-behavior therapy which has been used for many different problems, including attention-deficit disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, depression and a number of other behavioral types of disorders. Brewin reported extensively on the use of cognitive-behavior therapy for depressive and anxiety disorders (1996).
