The term "spirituality" means different things to different people. According to individual perception practically anyone can be considered spiritual. A musician, for example, might be considered spiritual because of her ability to move an audience with her music. Aside from Christ Himself, religious leaders might be the obvious choice as an example of someone with spirituality. Others throughout history, however, have also deserved the description of being spiritual. One rather unlikely example, for some individuals at least, is Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson was both a creative man and a religious man. Emersons spirituality, however, does not rest solely with his art or even solely with his connection to God. Instead there is a combination of these qualities that add up to spirituality. So too does Emersons connection to the earth and the plants and animals that live on that earth find its way into the equation of spirituality. To Emerson, all things of the nature of man, and indeed the spirit, revolved around the individual. For one to realize his best self he had to first discover himself and to learn to trust himself. He believed in the Biblical teaching that man was created in the image of God and that this left him with a tremendous responsibility. A responsibility to focus on what was and what could be, not what had been. Things of the past were simply that, things of the past, things that could not be changed. Things of the future were wide open and fully within the control of the individual. ...
