become a pianist as great as Liszt and a composer as great as Mozart. He never attained those great heights, but he still reached a place of great honor in the history of music. In 1872, Smetana first began to think of composing his symphonic poems (inspired by the work of his hero, Liszt) to describe a variety of aspects of Bohemia and its people: their history, their myths and their vision of independence as a nation. He wrote four of them during a period of less than a year, in 1874 and 1875, and added two more during the next few years. Each of the six symphonic poems is a complete work that can be played separately, but the entire cycle is so organized that they can also be played in a continuous sequence, as a monumental single work in six huge movements, entitled M? Vlast, which is translated as "My Country" or "My Fatherland." Smetana completed the third of the symphonic poems in February of 1875 and titled it "S?rka." The main character is a woman named "Sarka." She is a warrior who swears her vengeance against all men because of the betrayal of her lover. The story of Sarka is supposed to have taken place in the rocky valley near Prague that bears her name and the music conveys the wild, harshness of that land and Sarka, herself. The music is highly original and essentially dramatic musical style, which is not particularly surprising considering the vast amount of opera he had composed prior to the symphonic poems.
