he stood as a very powerful figure for symbolic representations of many ideals and desires. Many famous, and not so famous, artists have depicted David in many different ways. The following paper examines three different sculptures of David, all of them by famous artists. The paper examines Berninis, Donatellos, and Michelangelos sculptures of David. Bernini Berninis sculpture of David depicts a David in action. Most statues of David, and perhaps most statues of classical figures, are more often than not illustrations of figures in a particular quiet stance, not in a state of action or movement. With Berninis sculpture we have David in the act of pulling back his sling to throw the fatal blow to Goliath. Without knowing much about the time period this is something that clearly speaks of action against oppression of one kind or another. There is no pride, no vengeance seen in the face of David in this sculpture. What is seen is sheer determination and even humility, in the eyes of this particular viewer. Interestingly enough, it seems that more than any social or political comment this sculpture may be making, it stands as representative of the artist himself. Evidently Bernini used a mirror to sculpt his own face as that of David. This was his first real sculpture and perhaps, like David, he was taking on a powerful challenge that would determine the rest of his life: "Bernini chose to sculpture the face of David, resembling his own, since as David in his time - he was facing his first and crucial test - one which if he successfully achieves - will win him too fame for generations" (Shaked, 2003).
