Rogers identified three essential ingredients in the attitude: congruence, empathy and positive regard (Friedrich, 2009). Person-centered therapy makes some broad assumptions about people. First, Rogers believed that all humans are inherently good (Coastline Community College, 2007), which was a paradigm shift away from psychoanalytic models. Humans are also rational thinking creatures who are naturally creative and trustworthy (Coastline Community College, 2007). People want to take responsibility and make their own decisions about their life (Coastline Community College, 2007), they do not want others, not even their counselor making decisions for them. Humans are social creatures and are, therefore, cooperative by nature (Coastline Community College, 2007). All these basic principles of person-centered therapy are nearly the exact opposite of the beliefs found in psychoanalytic models. People enter therapy or counseling because there is a breakdown between their nature and what they are doing. Rogers said that if people act contrarily to the attributes just described, it is because their ability to maintain homeostasis and to meet their needs for security and other important things like love, etc. has been frustrated by something (Coastline Community College, 2007). In other words, they are at the moment limited in what they can achieve for themselves. That something might be external to them rather than internal. The external environment plays a role in client-centered therapy because Rogers recognized the strong influence of situations and event outside of the person. Person-centered therapy focuses on the present, not the past, it is about what is happening in the persons life at this moment (Coastline Community College, 2007).
