a piece of art created by Richard Serra. This art piece was a commissioned piece that Serra and the officials in charge had agreed upon. But later elected officials made their voices heard, making up many ridiculous statements, until the art piece was removed from its location and ultimately destroyed. While this article primarily deals with the political and influential aspects of the struggle to destroy Serras artwork, and the wrongful nature of such an action, we can also see elements within this essay that illustrate just how blind and docile Americans can be when faced with a chance to stand up for ones rights and ones freedoms, when faced with the majority and ridiculous but convincing arguments of officials. The following paper examines this particular aspect of Serras article. Falling Prey Art has always been a very powerful element in the evolution of mankind. It has driven people to anger, incited riots socially speaking, altered society, and generally caused one outcry after another as people discuss the importance or lack of value possessed in any particular piece of art. In light of this truth many artists have gone unnoticed or have found themselves the brunt of power plays to rid society of their visions. They have been black balled and even attacked as individuals who are against their country. And most of the negative attention such artists have received can generally be traced back to a handful or less of convincing political players. These are individuals who argue, ridiculously, but convincingly, to the public that such people are a threat to our way of life.
