In this way, it enables the person of faith to come to an acceptance of the most frightening prospect all human beings must eventually face. It has been condemned by liberal thinkers as being archaic and completely unsupported by fact. However, spiritual beliefs are not worldly, and therefore do not have to lend themselves to scientific inquiry. If a person believes, then it is so. In Judaism, there has been a shift from emphasizing resurrection to the "immortality of the soul," but where death is concerned, it is only resurrection that offers the greatest comfort and solace (De Lange, 2000, p. 211). At some point, perhaps borrowed from the Greek philosopher Plato, came the notion that there are a set of rewards and punishments awaiting individuals after death (De Lange, 2000). In order for this to take place, the soul must continue to live after the physical body had died (De Lange, 2000). This reverence for resurrection is readily apparent in the El male rahamim, the Jewish memorial prayer for the dead: "O God full of compassion, who dwell on high, grant perfect peace under the wings of the Shekhinah, in the ranks of the holy and pure ones who shine like the splendour of the firmament, to the soul of N son/daughter of N who has gone to his/her eternity, may he/she rest in the Garden of Eden. Master of mercy, please conceal him/her in the secret of your wings for all eternity, and bind his/her soul in the bundle of life.
