College provides the opportunity to cement a foundation upon which sturdy and lasting values will later be built. They are not necessarily easy to read by any stretch of the imagination. But that is precisely the point. Life is not easy, and neither is the development of rational thought. It is a slow, sometimes tedious, and often painstaking process. Any student who enters a college campus confident in the knowledge that he or she already knows how to think is quickly disillusioned. Higher education opens closed minds to endless possibilities and various interpretations. In an effort to gain greater insights into what to take from this experience, the writings that made the greatest impressions were John Taylor Gattos essay Against School and an excerpt from The Autobiography of Malcolm X entitled Learning to Read.
