Finn, F. Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby, and Mordecai Richlers The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz each take a different type of journey, but the destination for each of these young
men is the same - to make a particular dream come true. Huck Finns dream is to free himself of his abusive father and can only do so by
taking a voyage down the Mississippi River. Nick Carraway travels to New York in hopes of succeeding in business. Duddy Kravitz also embarks on a voyage to success,
and hopefully make a name and respected professional reputation for himself along the way. Huck Finn is the youngest of these three protagonists. Most of his life has been
spent escaping any type of organized religion or education and making mischief with his best friend Tom Sawyer. His father, Pap, is a miserable and violent man who often
beats Huck when he is in a drunken rage. Huck hatches a plan to escape his fathers abuse by faking his own death and running away. Along the
way, he meets Jim, a runaway slave who is traveling north in hopes of freeing his family. The two unlikely travelers strike up a quick and strong friendship.
Huck and Jim become like brothers; they help each other and protect each other against the hardships, robbers, and murderers they encounter on their voyage to freedom. When Huck arrives
at Jacksons Island, he believes his dream has come true and that he has also "fulfilled his American destiny by imposing his will upon the world" (Kravitz 3). He
