But roughly speaking, postmodernism is primarily a 20th century phenomena and one that serves to epitomize a rather loosely correlated set of values and beliefs. Postmodernism emerged from modernism, which was an aesthetic movement in the early 1900s that rejected the old Victorian artistic standards (University of Colorado). Modernity came into being with the Renaissance. Modernity implies the progressive economic and administrative rationalization and differentiation of the social world. The fundamental act of modernity is to question the foundations of past knowledge. It refers to the incipient or actual dissolution of those social forms associated with modernity (Postmodernism and its Critics). Postmodernism followed many of the relevant ideas about modernism, such as rejecting the boundaries that existed between high and low forms of art, disregarding rigid distinctions in terms of genre, and emphasizing a distinct sense of irony and playfulness in artistic ventures (University of Colorado). Postmodern art and dance is largely characterized by discontinuity and fragmentation, as well as by an overall destructured and decentered subject (University of Colorado). However, there are important differences between postmodernism and modernism as well (University of Colorado). One of the most notable differences rests in the attitude of postmodernism in regards to its attitude about many of these trends.
