Giltman 7/2010 Please Better defined as a type of anxiety disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can manifest itself in a variety of ways. Typically, PTSD is present in individuals who have experienced a traumatic event that may have involved the threat of injury or death. Often times, symptoms in patients will include reliving the event by having flashbacks, seeing visions in dreams which disrupt sleep patterns or physically reacting to situations that might remind the patient of the event. Furthermore, it is typical to see patients suffering from PTSD battle from depression or erratic mood changes. They develop a sense of apathy and detachment from their friends, family and co-workers. For war veterans, who in times of battle experience the unthinkable, they may also suffer from a heavy sense of guilt because they survived the event while their fellow soldiers didnt. For example, many Vietnam War veterans, who experienced the horrors of Southeast Asia during the 1960s and 1970s, still suffer from PTSD because of the images and nightmares they carry with them. Throughout history, people have recognized that exposure to combat situations can negatively impact the mental health of those involved in these situations and that is especially true of war veterans. Furthermore, war is a life-threatening experience that involves witnessing and engaging in terrifying and gruesome acts of violence.
