essays that discuss various aspects and perspectives on photography. Interestingly enough, it is not a photography work that actually possesses photographs, but a work that examines the power and influence
and role of photography in our world. The following essay examines what Sontag has to say in relationship to the United States and how photography represents and illustrates aspects of
American life. The paper also examines what contribution Sontag has made in terms of photography and the representation of American life. Photography, American Society, and Sontags Work Sontags
work focuses on many aspects of photography and as such does not merely focus on America and how photography is seen by the Americans. However, throughout the work we see
mention, here and there, about how all different people see photography and how it is a very powerful icon in many cultures. One intriguing comment which seems to sum
up a lot of how Americans see photography and how photography represents American life, comes when Sontag notes how photography is something of a quick record: "Photography expresses the
American impatience with reality, the taste for activities whose instrumentality is a machine. Speed is at the bottom of it all, as Hart Crane said,...the hundredth of a second caught
so precisely that the motion is continued from the picture indefinitely: the moment made eternal" (Sontag, 2001; 65). Americans also envision the photograph as proof of a particular event,
