The primary religion is Hindu (90%), followed by Buddhist (5%), Muslim (3%) and another 2% of other beliefs such as Christian and Shaman. Ruled by a King and Prime Minister, Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and Sher Bahadur Deuba, respectively, Nepals political affiliation is that of parliamentary democracy (Nepal). Until the royal family massacre in 2001, Nepal continued to struggle with maintaining its newly formed democratic government amidst the backdrop of communism. The tragic incident that took or injured the lives of the King and Queen, two of their children, the Kings brother and three sisters, as well as a brother-in-law and son-in-law has been shrouded in controversy ever since the public learned of the event nineteen hours after it happened. Myriad informants anonymously came forward with their versions of what occurred on that murderous occasion, yet they all differed so drastically from one another that Kathmandus legal authorities did not place much faith in any of them.
