first. After all, to an American, the term lunatic is really not much used. Rather, the mentally ill, the infirm, the mentally challenged and so forth are words that are more readily used. Yet, this story appears to be somewhat serious and what ensures is an actual exchange that culminates in a great deal of confusion. After all, if prisoners--albeit mentally ill residents--did not see the light of day, then what would it matter where they stayed? It does seem to matter which raises an important question for the masses that goes to nationalism. Is ones state of residence really important? Another point that seems to be made is that the lunatics are not necessarily that crazy ones, or perhaps they are not all insane. In the United States, not too long ago, there was Keseys Cuckoos Nest where the insane asylum served as a sanctuary but instead of making one better, it was seemingly detrimental. Also, the premise of that book and this story is that it is difficult to convince someone of ones sanity while in an asylum. People simply will not believe someone who has already been committed. In the story, the piece centers around one lunatic by the name of Bashan Singh (Murphy, 2003). Everyone would refer to him as Toba Tek Singh (2003). He is one of the characters who resides in an asylum. The character has little sense of time (2003). That said, the author explains that the protagonist does seem to acknowledge the fact that his relatives would be coming to visit (2003). This is uncanny.
