On the other hand, Mozarts Symphony in G-minor demonstrates that this eighteenth century musical genius was also quite capable of writing music that conveys a great deal of emotion. **The emotional quality of the G-minor Symphony is evocative of a tender yearning that implies lost dreams and terrible yearning; this effect is achieved from a variety of factors, such as, the themes, the melodic contours, musical texture and use of harmonic contours, as well as other factors** (Thesis Statement). These factors are evident from the beginning of the work. The first movement, which is written in the sonata-allegro form, opens with the Exposition of an intense theme, which is played by the violins, and establishes the home key of G minor. The expressiveness of this music is readily apparent, as the music appears to grow organically out of simple three-note germ motive. While this motive is simple in form, by placing it in the strings and, of course, in a minor key, it has a lilting haunting quality. In other words, the musical texture greatly adds to the emotional quality through the choice of the instruments that announce the motive. The second phrase of this opening sequence is harmonically one step lower then the first. Also at work is the rhythm, which serves to give the melody a restless feeling that is emphasized by the lively accompaniment of the lower strings. The stepwise movement of the first measure is quickly balanced by the dramatic upward leap that comes shortly afterward, after which the melody once more descends.
