assessment there are those who argue that testing is the way to go for success and others who argue for completely different approaches to improving the educational condition of the nation. The following paper analyzes and assesses three big names in educational assessment today. Those men are Alfie Kohn, George Madaus, and James Popham. Alfie Kohn Alfie Kohn is generally considered a very radical speaker who argues completely against the notion of competition, reward, and test scores controlling the direction of education. "Alfie Kohn writes and speaks widely on human behavior, education, and parenting. The author of ten books and scores of articles, he lectures at education conferences and universities as well as to parent groups and corporations" (Alfie Kohn Homepage, 2005). His work is widely divided between the topics mentioned and as such his focus is not on testing and educational assessment from that perspective. In summarizing what Kohn argues one author notes that "Society is an institution that has failed to realize the negative effects of stressing rewards, and other extrinsic forms of motivation in education" (Milnes, 2002). Kohn does not believe that stressing nothing but test scores will teach our children anything and that they should, realistically, be allowed to learn on their own in a manner that is encouraged and that they schools should "give students time to be confused and create a climate where its perfectly acceptable to fall on your face" (Milnes, 2002). This particular educator and speaker makes a great deal of sense if we, as a society, want real thinking children to grow into intelligent thinkers as adults.
