Everyone is familiar with the stereotypical assumption that all gay men love musicals and certain women in entertainment field such as Barbara Streisand and Bette Midler. And, in relationship to drag queens most people are aware that there are particular women who these men wish to emulate, women such as Cher and Marilyn Monroe. However, there is not a great deal of information on the reasons why gay men and drag queens love the women they do, and sometime wish to emulate them. The following paper examines why gay men and drag queens are intrigued and often obsessed with Marilyn Monroe. The paper argues that, for the most part, these men feel a very personal connection with Marilyn Monroe because they too are misunderstood. The paper first examines the life of Marilyn Monroe and then examines the obsession with her in the gay and drag queen communities. Marilyn Monroe When we think of Marilyn Monroe we think of one of the most beautiful and wonderful women in the entertainment field. We also think of a woman whose life was tragic as she was incredibly misunderstood. She was a simple girl from simple America, yet was a voluptuous woman that knew how to play dumb. However, she was not dumb and was essentially victimized by the media, something she was not strong enough to deal with. These are the simple truths that most know concerning Marilyn Monroe.
