of "manhood" from this perspective, illustrating how men, when confronted about their manliness, will often lash out and prove their manhood through murder. The following paper examines this theme in
Shakespeares play Macbeth. Macbeth: Manhood and Murder Lady Macbeth is, in many ways, the ultimate driving force in this play for she ultimately manipulates and controls her husband
into doing what she says so that he can be king. As one critic notes, "Lady Macbeth is sure that being king is what Macbeth really wants and that this
is the best for both of them. So, in response to Macbeths uncertainty, Lady Macbeth manipulates him by questioning his manhood and his love for her" (Character Analysis: Lady Macbeth).
At one point Macbeth is essentially telling her he will do what he desires in his own good time, but she rebuffs
and belittles him, essentially telling him that if she had an infant that was as unmanly as him she would kill it: "I have given suck, and know....I would, while
it was smiling in my face, Have pluckd my nipple from his boneless gums, And dashd the brains out, had I so sworn as you Have done to this" (Shakespeare
I vii). In this she is essentially telling him he is worthless, clearly not a man, and a true weakling, no stronger than an infant suckling. He quickly takes matters
