is a controversial issue, and this paper has been set up to examine the pros and cons of the theory that violence in the media leads to violence in real life. What are at least two facts presented by each side of the critical issue? Nancy Signorielli, who is convinced that media violence impacts viewers by fostering aggression and promoting fear, points out that laboratory studies have provided a causal link between seeing violent media portrayals and subsequent aggressive behavior among children. She also notes that researchers have determined that viewers of violence tend to become desensitized to violence which could have long-term effects. However, Jonathan Freedman, who doesnt believe that scientific evidence points to a connection between media violence and real-life aggression, points out that in laboratory tests, people tend to be more aroused by provocative imagery, rather than violence. Furthermore, he notes that "patterns of evidence from research doesnt support the hypothesis that exposure to media violence at a young age will necessarily cause aggressive behavior later on in life." In other words, while a few studies might have suggested that media violence and real-life aggression are linked, the research itself doesnt show a consistent pattern or linkage.
