She is arguably the first woman to live by modern concepts of female emancipation, and she did so at a time when such ideas were not only radical, but also still considered illegal. Woodhull, one of the most remarkable women in recent history, comes alive in the pages of Lois Beachy Underhills fascinating biography of her life, The Women Who Ran for President: the many lives of Victoria Woodhull. She was born in 1838, the seventh child of Rueben and Roxanna Claflin. Her mother, who was known as "Annie," considered Victoria to be a special child because she was the seventh and this always brought good luck (11). Annie would go into ecstatic trances while at church, rise from her seat and "pour out passionate hallelujahs" (16). Later, when Victorias father faced financial ruin and handled it by becoming alcoholic, Annie appears to have lost her already shaky grip on reality. Woodhull would later comment that her mother, who was "never wholly sane, would huddle her children together as a hen her chickens" wringing her hands over them and praying for deliverance (17). Both parents took their rage and frustration out on their children. Faced with two parents that were obviously emotionally disturbed, young Victoria developed coping mechanisms that utilized the fantasies of her parents. For example, one night as she was taking care of a sick sibling, an infant, she found herself nodding off, even though she knew to go to sleep while "on duty would earn her a beating.
