promise of fuzzy logic years ago was that IT systems could "create" their own data from existing data residing within them. Opponents envisioned smart computers that potentially could become malevolent in their operation, turning on their human creators with evil in their artificially-thinking electronic minds. The vision was much like that of "HAL," the computer with a mind of its own in "2001: A Space Odyssey" released in 1968. At the other extreme were purists holding that a computer was merely a machine and nothing more, that artificial intelligence was a topic best left alone. Today, some organizations have found that there is no need for artificial intelligence to gain greater value from the information it already possesses. What is needed instead is a more efficient means of using that information. In many respects, this is the attitude adopted by Sandia National Laboratories in its creation of MentorPal(r), software that employs neural-network technology to automatically offer "individual real-time advice to soldiers and other government teams in the field" (Johnson, 2004; p. 51). The Software System MentorPal and its software has many of the features of a living system, defined as a system with boundaries, metabolism, defining code, purpose, complexity and a defined size, that also is self-organizing and operates within a framework of conceptual meaning.
