One thing she taught me that helped determine my ultimate direction was the difference between education and experience. In her illustrious opinion - to me, at least - she did not believe that higher education - "the process of transforming raw information from various mediums into meaningful knowledge" (Christopher 56) -- was always necessary in order to succeed. To go or not to go: That has long been the question many budding professionals have wondered as they graduate high school, before they plunk down the big bucks for that all-important higher education degree. As one would expect, there are two opposing schools of thought on the answer; however, no matter which fork in the road a given individual might choose, grandmother believed that it is faster to get to the top through on-the-job training because of one important factor: experience. While a college degree may be helpful in attaining rank in some careers, grandmother understood that there were myriad professions where it made no difference whether one had any formal training; what counted with these jobs was the level of talent and experience the applicant could project. Retail management is a prime example. A basic knowledge in mathematics, economics, customer relations and business sense is all that is needed to soar up the retail management ladder. Most people in the retail industry start out when they are looking for a secondary job, filling in as seasonal help or when they are just starting out in the job market.
