These are only possibilities the company is considering (Harrington, 2002). There are a number of options Krispy Kreme would have to enter the Japanese market. They could enter an international joint venture agreement (IJV), they can franchise or they can open the branch on their own. Another option is to partner with another American company already established in Japan. There are different types of joint venture agreements, such as: * Two businesses establish a joint venture to conduct business in a third country, example: a US firm and British firm jointly operate in Japan. * Joint venture with a local firm, an American company enters an international joint venture agreement with a Japanese company to conduct business in Japan. * Enter a joint venture agreement with another American company already established in Japan. Franchising would involve the same steps as it does in the U.S. A resident of Japan would open a Krispy Kreme donut store by franchising with the Krispy Kreme Corporation. The first legal issue would be whether or not franchising was legal in Japan. Other legal issues involve the rules and regulations concerning food preparation and restaurants in Japan.
