do? Was Judas chose because someone had to betray Jesus in order to fulfill the prophecy? These questions may never be answered because there is really quite little written about Judas. This essay will explore what is written and how he played his part in the final days of Jesus life on earth. Judas was an apostle who sat under the teaching of Jesus for about three and one-half years before he handed Jesus over to the soldiers. He listened to the Son of God instruct common people as well as religious leaders, just as the others did. He heard Jesus talk and instruct the people to repent of their sins and to trust in Him as the sacrificial "Lamb of God." Judas observed Jesus heal the sick, cast out demons, and convert people from their sinful ways. In fact, as one of Christs disciples, he was empowered to perform similar miraculous acts: "When Jesus called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick" (Luke 9:1-2). He lived in Christs presence and yet he chose to betray Him. Judas was the only one of the Twelve who was not from Galilee; he was from Kerioth in southern Judaea. Jews from this part of the country believed they were superior in both religious traditions and political affairs to those from the North (Mark 14:70; Luke 22:59; John 7:41,52). Jesus called Judas to be one of the twelve after He had spent a night in prayer (Luke 6:12-16).
